The Seattle Relief Fund is $16 million of funding for direct cash assistance to Seattle’s most vulnerable low-income residents and their households who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

1. Application Opens

Application will be open for 3 weeks, from Monday, October 25, 2021, to Monday, November 15, 2021 at 11:59 pm.

2. Application Review

Applications will be reviewed for 2 weeks, from November 16, 2021 to November 29, 2021

3. Decision and Payments

Decisions will be made from November 29, 2021 to December 6, 2021 and payments will be sent after December 9, 2021.

How to Apply

Before you apply, you should:

  1. Gather your required identity and residency documentation. You can review the list of approved materials at https://seattlerelief.com/#required-documents
  2. Calculate your average monthly income.

To apply, you should:

  1. Click the "Apply Now" button on this website, this will take you to the application page.
  2. Create a Scholar Fund account. You will only need to provide your email address or phone number and set up a password.
  3. Complete all of the application questions. You can save your application and come back at any time.
  4. Once you are finished with your application, you will receive a confirmation text and email with your submission ID. Save this to check the status of your application or if you need support from our support team.  

After you apply, you should: heck your email inbox or your junk email folder for your confirmation. You will also get a text message confirmation the day you submit your application. You may log back in to your Seattle Relief Fund account and check to see if your application is being reviewed and if you are awarded funds. Please only submit your application one time.

    Live within the boundaries of the City of Seattle
    OR
    Be enrolled in the Seattle Promise program
    OR
    Be enrolled in Seattle Public Schools
    OR
    Be an artist/cultural worker who has owned or rented an art studio or rehearsal space within the boundaries of the City of Seattle at any time since March 2020.
    AND 
  • Be under 50 percent of the median household income in Seattle. The income eligibility chart can be found below.

How do I know if I am eligible to apply for the Seattle Relief Fund?

For example, if you are applying for a family of four, and your household total monthly income is less than $4,821, then your family is eligible.

How can I check to see if I live within the City of Seattle boundaries?

What types of income will I need to include in  this application?

You will be asked to provide your household average monthly income, which includes wages, tips, commissions, payments from self-employment activities, child support, unemployment, paid family and medical leave, retirement, and Social Security benefits. If your household receives public benefits, you will also be asked to provide the average monthly amount you receive from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), Refugee Cash Assistance, or Supplemental Security Income. You do not need to include income tax refunds, child tax credit payments, one-time rent assistance, and federal economic stimulus payments in your calculation.

Who is considered an artist or cultural worker?

Individual artists and cultural workers in these disciplines: 

  • visual/craft 
  • dance/choreography
  • music/composition/sound 
  • literary/graphic novel
  • media/film/digital media/screenwriting
  • poetry/spoken word
  • theater/scriptwriting
  • ethnic/traditional cultural forms

This includes consultants, editors, social practice, teaching artists, or art administrators.

Do artists/cultural workers who live in Seattle have to prove that they own or rent studio or rehearsal space in Seattle?

No, artist/cultural workers who live in Seattle do not have to also show that they own or rent a studio or rehearsal space in  Seattle. Only non-Seattle resident artists/cultural workers have to prove that they have rented or owned a studio or rehearsal space in Seattle at any time after March 2020.

I live outside of Seattle, but someone in my household works in Seattle. Can I still apply? 

If you live outside of Seattle, you or someone in your household must be 

  •  enrolled in Seattle Promise program
    OR
  •  enrolled in Seattle Public Schools 
    OR
  •  an artist/cultural worker who has owned or rented a studio or rehearsal space within the boundaries of the city of Seattle at any time since March 2020.

Will everyone who applies for Seattle Relief Fund receive this financial assistance?

Due to limited funds, we are unable to serve everyone. Some eligible applicants might not receive financial support. The review process is NOT first come, first served. 

To support those with the most need, we are prioritizing applicants based on the following criteria that are listed in no particular order:

  • Households who experienced harm from violence since March 2020, including hate/bias crime and survivors of domestic violence.
  • Families with children or adult dependents, single parents, single and pregnant persons, and households with at least one member who has a disability.
  • Households that experienced job/income loss as a result of the COVID-19 crisis AND were unable to access state unemployment benefits.
  • Households that did not qualify for federal stimulus payments.
  • Households where any member was uninsured for health care in 2020 or 2021.
  • Household where any member experienced death, hospitalization, or long-term health impacts (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/long-term-effects.html ) due to COVID-19.
  • Households where any member experienced a mental health or substance use crisis and sought medication or counseling due to the COVID-19 crisis.
  • Households that experienced housing instability, (examples include and not limited to staying in emergency shelters, inability to pay rent or mortgage, seeking emergency homeownership assistance) since March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

I received financial aid from the 2020 Seattle COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund for Immigrants. Can I still apply for the 2021 Seattle Relief Fund?

If you received financial aid from the 2020 Seattle COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund for Immigrants, you are not eligible for this funding. Please do not apply for the 2021 Seattle Relief Fund. 

You should already have been contacted by Scholarship Junkies in August 2021 to confirm your eligibility for an additional round of funding. If you received funding last year, and you did not receive a recertification notification through text or email, please call or text (206) 312-1630 or email update@seattlecovidfund.org.

I am undocumented. Am I eligible to receive funding?

Yes. This funding is intended for any low-income Seattle resident regardless of their citizenship or immigration status, as long as they meet eligibility requirements. The City of Seattle is not permitted to inquire about the immigration status of any person as per Ordinance 121063. This means we do not ask about immigration status in the Seattle Relief Fund application form.

I am married, and my spouse and I both qualify for funding. Should we both apply?

Only one of you should apply for your household. A couple (2 adults) is eligible to receive a payment of $2,000. 

My household consists of multiple families. How should we apply?

Each family should submit one application for that family.

My household consists of multiple single adults. How should we apply?

Each adult should submit one application for themselves.

Can I apply on behalf of my dependent children?

Your dependent children should be included in your household application.

When are applications due?

The application period opens Monday, October 25, and closes on Monday, November 15, at 11:59 p.m. You can submit your application at any time during this period. This is not a “first come, first served” application process. Late applications will not be accepted.

What kind of documents will I need to submit?

You will need documents that confirm your identity and connection to Seattle. (Click this link to see the city boundaries here: https://bit.ly/seattle-boundaries.) The table below provides a list of documents you can use. You will need to upload clear and readable documents from either List A, or from both List B and C.

I do not have access to the internet or to a device that is able to access the internet. Are there other options for me to apply?

We are only able to offer the application online. You can access it using a computer or mobile device. If you are not able to apply online, please contact one of these organizations for assistance.

Can I return to the application I started and finish it later?

Yes. Your application will auto save as you fill it out. You will also be able to pause your application and complete it later. To continue your application later you will need to log-in and must have your email and password or access to the phone number you used to sign up with.

Can I make changes to the application after it has been submitted?

If you need to update or correct an error on your application after it has been submitted, please submit a new application with your updated information no later than November 15, 11:59pm.

I currently do not have permanent housing. Can I still apply? 

Yes. You can apply if you do not have permanent housing. You will have to document that you  currently live within the boundaries of the City of Seattle. Please check the list of approved documents here seattlerelief.com/#required-documents

What happens if I submit a duplicate application by mistake? Am I disqualified as a result?

If you submit multiple applications by mistake, we will be able to identify that multiple applications from the same household were submitted and will review the application that conveys the higher need. We may also contact you via phone or text if we detect application issues.

Is there an appeal process if I do not receive financial aid from the Seattle Relief Fund?

Due to the anticipated high number of applications, there will not be an appeal process.

How much are Seattle Relief Fund payments?

  • One adult is eligible to receive a one-time payment of $1,000.
  • A household of  two adults is eligible to receive a payment of $2,000.
  • Households with children or adult dependents are eligible to receive a payment of $3,000.

Is this a one-time payment?

Yes, if you are approved for financial aid, you will receive a one-time payment.

How can I receive payments and how long will it take?

There are four options for receiving payments:

*Physical checks are void after 90 days.
**Physical gift cards are void after 12 months.

I don’t have permanent housing. How can I receive financial aid without a mailing address?

If you are approved for financial aid, you will have two payment options:

  • If you have an email, you may be able to receive funds through a digital gift card. 
  • If you prefer to receive a physical check or gift card, our partner organizations may be able to help. For instance, you may be able to use an organization’s mailing address to receive a physical check. Will my SRF payment be considered as income for tax purposes?

No, all payments are made as grants and classified as disaster relief and should not be considered as taxable income.

Is the information I provide in the application confidential?

Scholar Fund (Scholarship Junkies) collects the personal information you voluntarily submit on the online application for the Seattle Relief Fund. To help prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information, we have instituted appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect. We do not voluntarily share your data with government entities, including the City of Seattle. Do my family members or I need to be worried about public charge?

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), local temporary financial aid programs like the Seattle Relief Fund will not be considered in determining whether an individual is a public charge. If you have questions about your immigration status and/or use of benefits, you should speak with an immigration attorney or Department of Justice-accredited representative.

Will receiving this financial aid impact my family members’ or my ability to become a U.S. citizen?

If you are a lawful permanent resident/green card holder, receiving financial aid from the Seattle Relief Fund will not impact your ability to become a U.S. citizen. It will also not impact the ability of a lawful permanent resident/green card holder family member to become a U.S. citizen. If you have questions about your immigration status and/or use of benefits, you should speak with an immigration attorney or Department of Justice-accredited representative.
